French ship Triomphant

Seven ships of the French Navy have bourne the name Triomphant ("triumphal"):

• a ship of the line (1667-1689). Launched in 1667 as the Princesse, renamed to Triomphant in 1671 and to Constant in 1678.
• a ship of the line (1675-1692). Launched in Brest in 1675 as Constant, she was renamed to Triomphant in 1678. She took part in the Battle of Bévézier (1690-07-10) and in the Battle of Barfleur on the 1692-05-29. On 1692-06-01, she was destroyed by fire while fighting the English HMS Wolf.
• a ship of the line (1693-1720). Built in Lorient in 1693 and launched the year after, she took part in the battle of Velez-Malaga (1704-08-24).
• a ship of the line (1778-1805). Built in Toulon in 1778, she was launched in 1779. She took part in the three battles at Guichen in 1780 and to the American war of Independence. She was destroyed by fire in Toulon on the 1793-12-18. She was refloated in 1805 and scrapped
• a privateer (1797)
• a ship of the line (1804-1821). Built in Rochefort in 1804, she was launched in 1809.
• a destroyer (1931-1957). Built in Dukerque from 1931, she was launched in 1934. She displaced 2570 tonnes with 70 000 HP. She carried 5 138 mm guns, 4 37 mm guns and 9 torpedoes. She joined the Free French Forces in 1940. She was decommissioned on the 1954-12-06 and was scrapped in Bizerte in 1960.
• the present Triomphant is a strategic nuclear submarine, lead ship of her class.
