Initally HMS Swiftsure, she was a 74-gun ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built at Deptford in 1787 under plans by engineer Wells.

She was captured by the French ships Indivisible and Dix-Août in the Mediterranean on the 24 June 1801.

She fought on the French side at the Battle of Trafalgar, where she was re-captured by the British, on the 21 October 1805.

She was recommissioned in the Royal Navy as HMS Irresistible, since another British Swiftsure had been built since, and was used as a prison ship.

She was scrapped in Chatham in 1816.
