French Terms in Canadian Politics

In Canada, the political system is based on the Westminster parliamentarism and has evolved with local traditions. One of the particularity of the Canadian experience of the British constitutional monarchy is the presence of the French language in the terms.

French Westminster terms can be classified by where they come from and how they translate in today's language.

Terms coming from French-origin Engligh terms

  • Premier ministre du Canada (Eng.: Prime Minister of Canada)
  • Chambre des communes (Eng.: House of Commons)

Terms coming from France, usually adopted in Quebec.

  • Assemblée nationale du Québec (Trans.: National Assembly)

Terms closer to the United States.

  • Doyen de l'assemblée, ou de la Chambre (Eng.: Dean of the House)
