Freetag

(v.) The action of adding descriptor words or short phrases to items on the Web (such as a blog entry, an image, or a Web page/site) in an effort to describe and/or classify these items. Freetagging is most often associated with social software, such as blogs, wikis, social networking spaces (such as myspace or the thefacebook), and social software Web services (such as del.icio.us, flickr or assort). The body of tags in a given environment comprise a folksonomy, or an informal classification system resulting from multiple individuals' freetagging practice. A special case of freetagging is social bookmarking.

Three examples of freetagging are:

flickr - uses tags to help you find specific photos.

del.icio.us - uses tags to help you find specific links.

assort - users tags to help you find people; (people tag themselves with words that they feel describe themselves).
