Frederica, Delaware

Frederica is a town in Kent County, Delaware, United States. It is part of the Dover, Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 648 at the 2000 census. ILC Dover, the company who manufactured the spacesuits for the Apollo and Skylab astronauts of the 1960's and 1970's, along with fabricating the suit component of the Space Shuttle's Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), is located nearby.

Frederica is located at 39°0′31″N, 75°27′58″W (39.008585, -75.466194)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 km² (0.8 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 648 people, 246 households, and 168 families residing in the town. The population density was 297.9/km² (769.1/mi²). There were 275 housing units at an average density of 126.4/km² (326.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 70.22% White, 26.85% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.24% of the population.

There were 246 households out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% were married couples living together, 17.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 26.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.17.

In the town the population was spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $30,781, and the median income for a family was $41,389. Males had a median income of $24,688 versus $22,222 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,118. About 12.0% of families and 16.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 12.6% of those age 65 or over.

A bizarre, and apparently true, story concerns a woman who hung herself by a public road in Frederica. This occurred on October 26, 2005. The police thought they calls they received were an early Halloween prank and ignored them for three hours. [1]
