Fred Swanton

Fred Willer Swanton (11 April 1862 – September 1940) Was Mayor of Santa Cruz from 1927 until 1933. He began the expansion of Santa Cruz County from a small lumber city along the Pacific Coast to a booming beach city.
Fred Swanton was the son of Albion Paris Swanton who traveled from Brooklyn to Santa Cruz at the age of four. In 1881 he helped install the first telephone system in Santa Cruz.
The community of Swanton, fourteen miles to the north of Santa Cruz is named after him.
