Franz Grashof

Franz Grashof (July 11, 1826 in Düsseldorf - October 26, 1893 in Karlsruhe) was a German engineer. He was a professor of Applied Mechanics at the Technischen Hochschule Karlsruhe. He is one of the founding directors of Verein Deutscher Ingenieure in 1855. He developed some early steam-flow formulas but made no significant contribution to free convection.

The Grashof Number was named after him. It is a very important dimensionless parameter in analyzing Natural or Free convection.
