František Švantner (1912 - 1950)

He was born in Bystrá in a family of a worker. He studied in his birhtplace, later in Pobrezová and Banská Bystrica. after finishin his studies he worker as a teacher in few different cities (Mýto pod Ďumbierom, Podbrezová, Nová Baňa, Hronský Beňadik) until he worked for a short time as a principal of school in Hronov. He also worked in local organization of Matica Slovneská. He became a member of Umelecká beseda slovenská. He died on brain tumour in Prague.

He started writing during his studies in Banaská Bystrica, where he published his short story in periodical Svojeť. In his production he gained inspiration from archaic myths and ballads. A great impact on his production had Emile Zola, Victor Hugo, Charles Ferdinand Ramuz, Fiodor Michajlovič Dostojevskij, from slovak authors mainly Margita Figuli, Ľudo Ondrejov and Dobroslav Chrobák. He also gained inspiration from E.A.Poe. In his writtings he celebrates nature, he uses naturalistic and lyrical means. He uses elements of irrationality and fantasy, also sensualism but he mainly explores the boundarz between life and death.
