Frans de Wever

Frans de Wever (1869 - 1940[1]) was a Dutch General Practitioner, Municipal doctor, rail doctor, mining doctor, and hospital founder [2] [3]


[edit] Early years in Heerlen

After graduating as a medical doctor, de Wever settled in Heerlen in 1897[4] (some sources say 1896[5]) on the urge of mayor and pharmacist Charles de Hesselle (a college of de Wever’s father, who was a pharmacist in Nuth [6])).

He took over the practice of Karel Winckebach [7] (on of the founders of cardiology).

In the early years he made use of horse and carriage to serve his patients, but in November 1902 a car was both (made by Cudell from the nearby city of Aachen) [8].

[edit] A hospital

With mining operations expanding in Heerlen, more and more patient were to severely wounded to be taken care of by de Wever alone. These patients all had to be transported, over muddy bad roads, to the Calvariënberg, a hospital in Maastricht. De Wever felt a hospital was needed in Heerlen.

There was already a two hydrotherapy centers, based on Kneipp, called Mariabad and St. Josephs Heilbronn[9]. The Brothers of the Heilbronn if they were interested in starting a hospital. After a negative answer, de Wever approach monseigneur Joseph Savelberg, rector and founder of the sister congregation that ran Mariabad.

Although Savelberg was at first reluctant, presumably because his congregation was founded under the condition that it would not far in the other congegationsworks [10]. But images of a hospital set up by the mines, with the possibilities of protestant doctors and nurses, convinced Savelberg to co-found the hospital [11].

In September 1904 Savelberg blessed the hospital, build in the garden of Mariabad, close to the corner of Akerstraat and Putgraaf. Presumably the hospital was named Maria Hilf Spital. The were two wards (one for men and one for women) with 10 beds each, two rooms (five bets in total), one operating room, and a kitchen [12].
