Schätzing studied communication studies and ran his own company-advertising agency INTEVI in Cologne. Schätzing became a writer in 1990, trying his hand at writing through penning several novellas and satires. Schätzing published his first novel Tod und Teufel in 1995. In 2000 his thriller Lautlos was published.

Schätzing achieved his greatest success in 2004 with the science fiction thriller The Swarm. The novel deals with the Gaia Theory; the notion of nature resisting mankind, as any living thing resists a harmful organism. An unknown intelligence from the oceans tries to exterminate man in return for destroying its habitat.

Uma Thurman bought the film rights to The Swarm in May 2006, which is now in development and due for release in 2008.
