Frank Eugene Hook

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frank Hook (1893-1982) served in the US Congress as the only Democratic representative from the 12th District in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, from 1934-42, and 1944-46. There will never be another representative from the 12th District, due to the fact that it no longer exists. The 12th has since been combined with other districts to become the 1st District of Michigan, one of the largest by area in the country.

Hook served under Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. He voted to declare war upon Japan, when Congress was convened upon the attack on Pearl Harbor. Hook was instrumental in the establishment of Social Security and the minimum wage — part of Roosevelt's New Deal. He also proposed a bill to establish the Isle Royale National Park, located in Lake Superior and had the honor of dedicating it in August of 1946.
