Franciscan Friars of the Renewal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal or CFR are a Roman Catholic mendicant offbranch of the Order of the Capuchin Franciscans. This order's members are also known as the Friars of the Renewal. They are located in the New York City Metropolitan Area such as the Bronx, Yonkers, Harlem, as well as Honduras and England. Compared to other Franciscan orders, the Friars of the Renewal wear gray instead of brown. Founded in 1987, it is a relatively new order. It is also a fast growing order with around 100 friars. In 2006, the Friars welcomed 15 postulants.

Their belief includes a return to the authentic Capuchin way of life. In addition, the friars are known for their fidelity to the Pope. The Community characterises itself as Catholic, Franciscan, Capuchin, Contemplative, Prophetic, Apostolic, Fraternal and Pro-Life.

The Franciscan Sisters of Renewal began in 1988.

The Franciscans of the Renewal were significantly involved during the September 11, 2001 crisis in Manhattan. On September 12, 2001, a group of friars from the Order walked the subway tunnels to Manhattan. (Fr. Mauriusz, 2002)
