Francis Newport, 1st Earl of Bradford

Francis Newport, 1st Earl of Bradford, PC, (23 February 162019 September 1708) was an English noble and politician.

The son of the 1st Baron Newport and Rachael Leveson was baptised around a month after his birth in Wroxester, Shropshire. He was educated in Christ Church, Oxford and succeeded his father's titles on 8 February 1651.

From 1640 to 1643 or 1644, Newport, was Member of Parliament (MP) for Shrewsbury. On 29 June 1644, he fought in the Battle of Oswestry in the Civil War, on the side of Charles I and became imprisoned. Newport was Custos Rotulorum of Shropshire between 1660 and 1708, and Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire between 1668 and 1672, and between 1689 and 1704. He was Comptroller of the Household from 1668 to 1672, Treasurer of the Household from 1672 to 1687, and from 1689 to 1708, and he was Cofferer of the Household from 1691 to 1702.

Newport was two times Privy Counsellor, firstly between 1668 and 1679, and secondly from 1688 or 1689. On 11 March 1674 or 1675, he was created Viscount Newport, of Bradford in the County of Shropshire and on 11 May 1694 he became Earl of Bradford, in the County of Shropshire, too. Newport died aged 88 in Twickenham and was buried on 4 October 1708 in Wroxester.

On 28 April 1642, Lord Bradford married Lady Diana Russell, daughter of the 4th Earl of Bedford at St Gile's-in-the-Fields Church, London. They had four children:
