Francis Burt (b. January 13, 1807- d. October 18th, 1854) was a Nebraska democratic politician best known for being the 1st governor of the newly created Nebraska Territory. He was born in Pendleton, South Carolina in 1807. Ran and was elected to the South Carolina legislature from 1832 to 1844. He was the South Carolina state treasurer in 1844 and a delegate to the state's constitutional convention in 1852. He moved to the newly created Nebraska territoy and became the governor on October 16, 1854. Two days later he died in Bellevue, Nebraska. Burt County, Nebraska is named in his honor.
