Francesinha

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Francesinha (literal translation: Little French or Frenchie, although the female form of the word can also be translated as Little French Girl) is a Portuguese meal originally from Porto, made with wet-cured ham, linguiça, fresh sausage like chipolata, steak or roast meat and covered with a large quantity of cheese.

The sandwich is toasted and served in a shallow bowl, smothered with a thick, very spicy beer and tomato-based sauce. It's usually served with french fries and sometimes with a fried egg on top.

There are a lot of variations to Francesinha, some with champignons and cream, prawns, pork, chicken, tuna or even with vegetables only (although some don't recognize it as real Francesinhas).
