[edit] Corded Ware

I'll be sure to read them; I have a lecture to hold on 26 June about CW and other 3rd millennium cultures, so I do think I will do work on the article in June at the latest; at the moment I am under pressure to research the Migration Period and related cultures, so CW may have to wait a little bit. But feel free to have away at it. Feel also free to start JIES :) I agree they have very intriguing stuff. How are the image uploads doing? What error message exactly do you see? What browser are you using? regards, dab () 09:33, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Erinna

In the Erinna article, you disambiguated the Eusebius reference to Eusebius of Myndus, commenting that it was definitely not Eusebius of Caesaria. Are you quite certain? One is, after all, a historian, the other a philosopher. That he was known especially for his Ecclesiastical histories does not mean that Eusebius did not treat of secular matters.

Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Fable has it that the "Chron. Arm." places Erinna around 352 BC. I believe that this is a reference to Eusebius's Chronicon, translated into Armenian, which includes a large number of passages from otherwise extinct historians.

I would have changed it myself, but you seemed very certain. Thus, this note.

[edit] License tagging for Image:EffigyMounds01.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:EffigyMounds01.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 01:05, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:BlackHawkBridge01.gif

Thanks for adding the HABS/HAER image. I think Image:066486pv.jpg is an example of (what I consider) the proper way to source and caption HABS/HAER images. Burlington Rail Bridge is an example of how the image was placed in the bridge infobox. You could have also uploaded the larger image instead of the HAER thumbnail. --Dual Freq 02:05, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] NYCS articles, et al

Thanks for helping out! There are only a couple of people here making regular contributions to the NYC subway project (and no offense to anyone else, but I've been by far the biggest contributor lately).

You're right, there are quite a few stations without corresponding articles. I've felt compelled to create some stubs, but lately I've been far more compelled to fix up existing articles.

Your opinions on the relationship between station articles and line articles has in fact been implemented throughout the project. Most line articles (for example, IRT Flushing Line, IND Queens Boulevard Line) have tables listing stations and service information, while the current infobox (Template:Infobox NYCS) includes a field for the line information, which is automatically linked.

If you'd like, leave me a message listing a few of the articles with the messed-up tables and the "coordinates"; I'll see what I can do.

Thanks about 95th Street; unfortunately, that's one of the few BMT stations I've worked on so far, I've mostly been focusing on IRT and IND stations in Manhattan. I'll get around to Brooklyn, though =)

I don't think that there's a list of missing articles; however, there's a list of stations, and whatever is red-linked there is missing.

Anything else you want to say/ask, just leave it on my talk page, of course. Thanks!

[edit] Infoboxes etc

Well, the information at Template:Infobox NYCS should help. It might be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it it becomes quite simple.

Here are a few webpages I keep open while I edit; it's easy for me with Firefox:

If you need examples, try station articles for the IRT Flushing Line, IRT Pelham Line, and IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line—I added nearly all of these myself. Basically, regarding next north/next south info, the infobox should show which service(s) take one from the current station to the next one, NOT all the services at the next station.

I agree with you about having information about what's outside each station. Unfortunately, I've been concentrating less on the information in articles as the format and layout; when these are done, I'll focus on the body content. Feel free to add information, though; I'm from Queens, so you'll probably know a lot more about local Brooklyn stuff than me =)

Yeah, the BMT Jamaica Line needs a lot of work. So does the IND Queens Boulevard Line, the BMT Brighton Line, and the BMT Canarsie Line, as a matter of fact.

Larry V (talk) 03:45, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Well, as you can see from my contributions, I must not be fully sane, then =) —Larry V (talk) 04:41, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Oversized IND

I was not quite aware that "oversized" stations (e.g., in your edits to Bay Ridge-95th Street (BMT Fourth Avenue Line) were a hallmark of IND construction. Can you point me somewhere where I can perhaps read about this? —Larry V (talk) 21:56, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Now that I think about it, I'm more than aware of this IND tendency. I've noticed that most stations on the IND Queens Boulevard Line have ridiculously enormous mezzanines.
The entire infobox is basically a template that I coded, at Template:Infobox NYCS. The info placed in the fields are automatically rendered when the page(s) are brought up. A list of service templates can be found here: Wikipedia:WikiProject New York City Subway/Line templates. These basically divide up the system into sections and services, so that they can be easily changed throughtout all subway pages if need be. For instance, if the R was replaced by, say, the X, any reference to R can be changed to X (NYCS Fourth far south would be changed to X), and all the pages that included the templates with R would automatically be updated. As for north/south stations that are express, I basically just act as if they are local, because only the local services can take one from the current local stop to the express stop anyway. For example, at 53rd Street I listed 59th Street as the next south station with the R and N (late nights), because those are the only services that take one from 53rd to 59th. I did not show the express services for 59th because they are of little use to someone at 53rd. —Larry V (talk) 23:03, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Court Street

For custom north/south station, just use the "north_custom_station"/"south_custom_station" fields instead of the typical fields. For the first station, use "north_custom_station"; for the second and third, if applicable, use "north_custom_station_2" and "north_custom_station_3". In each field, enter the table code that exactly as you want it to appear. For instance, for Court Street:

north_custom_station = Broadway Line:<br />Whitehall Street-South Ferry<br />N 5 R 1234

north_custom_station_2 = Nassau Street Line:<br />Broad Street<br />M 1

This produces, roughly:

Next North Broadway Line:
Whitehall Street-South Ferry
N (5) R (1234)
Nassau Street Line:
Broad Street
M (1)
Yeah, at some point it just got too difficult to code everything into the infobox template, so for some articles it's just easier to hard-code the infobox. There aren't really enough of these, however, to make editing service changes a real issue. —Larry V (talk) 05:00, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Iowa vandal

It could well be the same kid. I left a blatant vandal warning on the logged-in version, and the anon hasn't vandalized for nine days so I left it alone. You can also post at WP:AIV if he comes back and I'm not around. The IP belongs to a grade school [1] -- nothing surprising there. Neither had been blocked before. Antandrus (talk) 03:11, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Station Complexes

 • Recent reconstruction has made Times Square a much more "integrated" station than before; it is an important-enough complex that it should have its own page. I can see where you're coming from with the separate stations, though.
 • DeKalb Avenue, however, is quite plainly one station and must have one article. I don't see any difference between Brighton DeKalb and 4th Avenue DeKalb, because there is no such differentiation—it's one station! The only reason I use Brighton in the article title is because one has to be used, either Brighton or Fourth Avenue, and DeKalb opened as part of the northern Brighton Line. "New York City Subway" cannot be used because of DeKalb Avenue on the BMT Canarsie Line.
 • Last I checked, there were three separate articles for the Atlantic–Pacific complex. If you're referring to the renaming of the BMT Fourth Avenue station to Atlantic Avenue–Pacific Street, this is because updated station signage there has added "Atlantic Avenue," although the original "Pacific Street" mosaics remain.
 • The two levels of the Archer Avenue Line were built together and are considered a separate line from the IND Queens Boulevard Line and BMT Jamaica Line. There are separate articles for each level (BMT Archer Avenue Line and IND Archer Avenue Line), although I highly disagree with this. (Sorry, realized that these articles haven't been created yet.) The line was built as one line and not two (despite the lack of connections), and there is not nearly enough to say about each level by itself to merit separate articles. Sutphin Boulevard–JFK and Jamaica Center are each bi-level stations; having an article for each level (thus two articles per station) would be ineffective because there just would not be enough to write about each part.

[edit] Douglas Q. Adams

I started a stub on him awhile ago and then forgot about it. Now, they are trying to delete it. I wonder if you can help me expand it and fight the deletion? --Jpbrenna 23:49, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Anti-Semitic vandalism.

While the attack on this page was rather vile, that IP hasn't done anything else, and it's an AOL address, so blocking is really not appropriate in this instance. Thanks.--Sean Black (talk) 03:08, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] your rfar

I cannot protect you: You'll have to take responsibility for your actions; from the evidence posted, it seems obvious that you have been indulging in behaviour rather frowned upon; your best course of action is (a) to recognize this, (b) to show where and how you were provoked (maybe you were only reacting to similar taunts?) and (c) publically agree to stay away from that sort of disputes in the future. You may propose to agree to some sort of 'parole' or mentorship that will allow you to pursue your uncontroversial projects, but seeing that you appear to behave rather erratically under pressure, it is probably a good idea for you to stay away from the disputes in the near future. regards, dab () 07:20, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] More NYCS

Yes, I can only recall three users making consistent edits to subway articles in the last few months, and you and I are two of them. And I agree that those who came before sure set up some crazy stuff.

 • As far as I'm concerned, the "Manhattan Bridge Line" does not exist. The tracks over the bridge are certainly not two separate "lines," one BMT and one IND. As I'm sure you know, in its earliest service the bridge handled BMT service on both sides, Nassau Street service on the south and Broadway on the north.
 • Some of them were attempting to fashion the portion of the 2/3 from Park Place to Borough Hall as the "IRT Brooklyn Branch." Of course, there is no such designation; they're on the Brooklyn Branch of the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line, if anything.
 • I don't know about you, but this business about the "IND Culver Line" is a little shady. I've heard that line referred to as the Jay-Smith Streets subway, the South Brooklyn Line, even as a southern portion of the IND Crosstown Line, but never as the "IND Culver."
 • For some reason, the Nassau/Broadway Canal Street complex has been condensed into one article, Canal Street (BMT station), which strikes me as odd. (This was why the City Hall infobox wasn't working.) The reasoning given is that it has long been a major transfer point for BMT services, which is all well and good. However, Atlantic Av-Pacific St has also been a major transfer point, not only between BMT and IRT but the LIRR as well. That complex remains split up. In another show of inconsistency, the Lex Canal Street station, which is connected to the BMT complex, is excluded from the article.

I'm not quite sure what you are referring to when you said, "And custom stations north seem nightmarish; at least three. Considering there is a Manhattan Bridge line involved, it would seem you need a 4th custom station." It looks like you mean City Hall, but that station only has one station north, which is Canal Street.

I've discovered this, which means that I'm going to have to overhaul all of Template:Infobox NYCS. So if you start noticing broken infoboxes, just let me know, and I'll fiddle some more.

And no, I'm not an admin, so I'm sincerely grateful for your nomination. Thanks a lot! =)
