[edit] Fifth official?

Telecasts for the 2006 FIFA World Cup have mentioned a fifth official being assigned to games. E.g. In the Croatia–Japan match, with Belgian referee and assistants, the fourth and fifth officials are from the USA. What are the duties of the fifth? Is he strictly a backup? Has he got extra duties now that the officials are radio linked? —C.Fred (talk) 14:42, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

The Laws make no mention of a 5th official. Perhaps that person is the Match Commissioner? --Daveb 07:23, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, it's another person from the officiating reserves. That's why I didn't know if it was for specific duties related to the radio system, which is new for the World Cup. —C.Fred (talk) 22:33, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
