[edit] History

The FHS band was established in 2001 when Foster High School first opened. The Band began to compete at the 4A Non-Varsity level until 2002 when they entered the 4A Varsity Category. Foster High School, in its 6 years of existence, has advanced to the Area level twice and to the State level in 2005.

[edit] Achievements

In the Fall of 2003, the Foster Band Advanced to Area Competition where they ranked 4th of 13 with the marching show "The Divine Comedy: The Inferno and Ascension" under the amazing Drum Majors, L. McElroy, N. Bradford and W. Gates, with Dave Terrall and Daren Jordan as Band Directors. The Band scored 1 point behind 3rd place and 2 points behind 2nd place.

In 2005, Foster HS's Marching Band advanced into the top 20 AAAA Bands in the State of Texas, the first band in LCISD to advance to the State Competition. The Band was under the Direction of Dave Terrall, Daren Jordan. Drum Majors were A. Fleischmann, J. Carrigan, and N. Bauer. The Band performed selections from Metropolis Symphony, including Bizarro, Lex, and Red Cape Tango.

In the spring of 2006, the Foster Drumline and Wintergaurd advanced to State Level in indoor Percussion and Wintergaurd. The Drumline was awarded Open Class State Champions, with their debut piece of Cop Drama. The Wintergaurd placed 3rd overall in State Competition.

When the Foster drumline went to a competition in Austin in November of 2006, one of the band students allegedly lost the keys to the truck (the definite fate of the keys is still uncertain). That night, at the football game against Bay City, the battery had no drums. They had to borrow them from the B.F. Terry High School's drumline. This made them very unhappy.

[edit] The "Spirit Stick"

The Spirit Stick is an award given to the Section that has shown the most "Spirit" during the previous week. Upon reciving the Spirit Stick, the winning section adds decoration to it then returns it to be awarded to another section. In the past the addition of decoration has been as innovative as 'addition' of chips in the paint and dents in the wood after the baritone section beat it up when they couldn't think of what else to add to it since they had already won it so many times. This idea was proposed by the always creative Nicholas Lupfer. The tenor saxaphone section, however, has reportedly been innovative enough to attach a 30 foot banner to the spirit stick.

[edit] The Lost Spirit Stick

Occassionally, the spirit stick is not returned at all, as in the nearly forgotten case of its theft by the baritone section in spring of 2004. After winning the spirit stick numerous times throughout the marching season in 2003, Terrall decreed that the baritone section would not be awarded the spirit stick any further regardless of their level of spirit. This made the baritone section angry and they collaborated to steal the spirit stick some time after the conclusion of the marching season. Very few people know this bit of Foster Band trivia, but that spirit stick still exists to this day in the house of Joe Rogers, perhaps to be awarded one day to a TRULY spirited section of the band. Alternatively, it may just sit there and rot for all eternity (and trust me, it takes a long time for a spirit stick to rot).
