Fort Steele, British Columbia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fort Steele was a town in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. The settlement was founded during the Kootenay Gold Rush in 1864. The town was renamed to "Fort Steele" in 1888, after the fort established at this site by Sam Steele, the superintendent of the North-West Mounted Police (now the Royal Canadian Mounted Police).
As the economy declined after the end of the gold rush, Fort Steel eventually became a ghost town. In 1961, the province of British Columbia bought the site and converted it to a "heritage town".
