Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania

Fort Indiantown Gap is a census-designated place in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 85 at the 2000 census. It is the home to Pennsylvania National Guard Training Center in the US Army base of the same name.

Fort Indiantown Gap is located at 40°26′13″N, 76°34′34″W (40.436987, -76.576055)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 49.2 km² (19.0 mi²). 48.8 km² (18.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.84%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 85 people, 33 households, and 26 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1.7/km² (4.5/mi²). There were 37 housing units at an average density of 0.8/km² (2.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.65% White, 1.18% African American, and 1.18% from two or more races.

There were 33 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 78.8% were married couples living together, 3.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.2% were non-families. 15.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 16.5% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 34.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 84.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $65,893, and the median income for a family was $66,607. Males had a median income of $42,250 versus $31,071 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,757. None of the population and none of the families were below the poverty line.

  • Lebanon author/novelist Gary Ludwig speaks to groups about an infamous Indiantown Gap 19th century murder that featured six defendants who all had blue eyes. They became known as The Blue Eyed Six, given the moniker by a newspaper reporter who was attending the trial. The true story has become part of Indiantown Gap's folklore. Their murder trial received worldwide publicity and inspired Arthur Conan Doyle while he was writing The Red-Headed League. Ludwig’s four part magazine series about the murder was published in 1979. The magazine articles were subsequently published in booklet form.
