Fort Calhoun, Nebraska

Fort Calhoun is a city in Washington County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 856 at the 2000 census. Fort Calhoun Nuclear Generating Station is built on 660 acres (2.7 km²). This historic town includes Fort Atkinson, the first fort built west of the Missouri river.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there are 856 people, 342 households, and 229 families residing in the city. The population density is 533.1/km² (1,380.5/mi²). There are 375 housing units at an average density of 233.5/km² (604.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.48% White, 0.58% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 1.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 342 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $41,500, and the median income for a family is $57,679. Males have a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,779. 3.8% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.1% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
