Formula One 06 is the next of the official licensed Formula One series of video games announced for PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and planned for PlayStation 3.

Developed once again by Studio Liverpool (formerly Psygnosis), it was released in Europe on July 28, 2006 for PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. Continuing with the Career Mode concept of previous editions, this year's game will contain two types of career mode, the regular format of being a driver or alternatively, players can be a chief engineer for a certain driver, a mode that is likely to be PlayStation 3 only. The duration of this years career mode is the same as last years game and is simply a repeat of the 2006 season each time.

Players begin their career with Super Aguri F1, Scuderia Toro Rosso or Midland F1 Racing. The better the players perform, the further they climb up the grid order, eventually being offered a contract to drive for current champions Renault F1.

In addition, certain prizes can be unlocked once a certain criterion has been fulfilled (e.g. winning the world championship). A trophy cabinet section is also featured so players can view the trophies they have won in different grands prix.

The game also features the exciting new knockout qualifying system, introduced at the start of the season. Other new additions include the formation lap and the Jerez test track in Spain.

Netplay was eventually removed from the final release of the game, which disappointed fans everywhere. It was promised that for the first time the ability to race cross-platform would be possible, allowing PSP players to take on PS2 players. Studio Liverpool cited time restraints as a reason for this.

The PlayStation 3 version of the game, which will be called F1 Championship Edition and with an early 2007 release date planned, will include many advanced features, including more realistic graphics, new AI, the Safety Car and new handling and physics. Gamespot also reports the game is planned for release in the United States. [1].

A playable demo of the game was released on the 17th November 2006, downloadable through the PS3's online service.
