Format has several meanings.
In terms of media
- Container format – for holding (containing) data.
- Carrier signal format – for holding data during active wireless transmission.
- Multiplexing format – for dividing data for active transmission.
- Recording format – for statically holding data on a data storage device.
- Paper format – the size and shape of paper
- Film format – The size of image capture on sheet- or rollfilm
- Medium-format – Medium sized film format.
- Content format – for converting data to information.
- Conversation format – for communicating information such as language or signals.
- Encryption format – for concealing information.
- Scrambling format – for scrambling information.
In the field of computing:
- Disk format – the layout of data how to store in area of a disk.
- Data format – various ways information is encoded
- Audio file format – a medium for storing digital audio sounds and music
- Container format (digital) – a medium for storing images and digital video or motion graphics
- Formatted text – word processing meta data
- Format – a command in the Common Lisp programming language
In the fields of graphic design:
- Text formatting – creating the typeset appearance of a document, including text justification.
- Page formatting – creating a template or grid for content on a page, including web pages with multimedia elements.
Other meanings:
- Radio format – the musical style and programming philosophy of a radio station.
- TV Program format – license to produce and to broadcast a national version of a copyrighted foreign TV program and to use its name
