Foreign Service Officer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Foreign Service Officers or FSOs are Department of State employees who help formulate and implement the foreign policy of the United States. These officers work a large part of their service time overseas as essential members of US embassies, consulates, and diplomatic missions.
FSOs are commissioned by Congress, similar to military officers. New FSOs are hired on a career limited appointment, not to exceed five years. FSOs must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language along with potential for advancement within the Foreign Service before becoming tenured employees.
