For the Masses is a 1998 tribute album of Depeche Mode songs, specifically the works of Martin Gore; the fact that no songs by Vince Clarke or Alan Wilder were chosen was not a coincidence. The project was started by the band members of God Lives Underwater, including the late David Reilly, and features a wide array of bands including The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones, Rammstein, and Meat Beat Manifesto. The Foo Fighters and Marilyn Manson wanted to do tracks but schedule complications prevented them in the end. Manson, who wanted to do "Personal Jesus", eventually covered the song in 2004.

The tribute album got considerable press by the media and the band. Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins performed the song "Never Let Me Down Again" with Depeche Mode at the KROQ Acoustic Christmas concert in 1998. The "World in My Eyes" cover by The Cure, although not popular with that band's fanbase, appears on the Cure box set Join the Dots.

The album cover and title were both inspired by Music for the Masses, an earlier Depeche Mode album.
