"For the Greater Good of God" is a song by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It is featured on their 14th studio album, A Matter of Life and Death, which was released on August 28, 2006 in most of the world, and September 5 in the United States and Canada. Both music and lyrics were written by founder and bassist Steve Harris, and it is the only song on the album to be written solely by Harris.
"For the Greater Good of God" is the longest track on the album at a length of nine minutes and twenty four seconds.
In an interview with the British music magazine Kerrang! before the album was released, Harris said about the lyrics: "I'm not pro- or anti-religion, but I think religion is in everybody's life every day, whether they like it or not. A lot of terrible things have been caused by people's different ideas of how life should be. This song is just asking why."
