Flyff, short for 'Fly For Fun', is a free MMORPG made by the Korean company Aeonsoft. As the name implies, players can fly around the world using a hover board, broom and other devices (Premium Items). It also offers player vs. player as well as 120 levels of character progression.

Flyff received an award from South Korea's Ministry of Culture in June 2004.[1]

[edit] Game versions

There are many different versions of Flyff available, depending on the country the player is playing from. Currently, servers with their respective versions are available in Korea, Japan, China, Thailand, Philippines, and an International version in English serving Europe, South America, North America and Oceania. Philippine's Flyff is also in English, but it only accepts connections from IPs originating from the Philippines (that is, those who do not live in the Philippines cannot connect to the Philippine Flyff servers). Most versions of Flyff are run by a separate company that is affiliated with Aeonsoft. Below are some of the different companies running official, licensed Flyff servers:

  • Aeonsoft - Aeonsoft hosts the Korean Flyff servers.
  • Gala-Net Inc. - Gala-Net Inc. serves the International community with English Flyff.
  • Leadinia Co. Ltd. - Leadinia serves China with Chinese Flyff.
  • Excite Japan Co. Ltd - Excite Japan serves Japan with Japanese Flyff.
  • NetGames - NetGames serves the Philippines with Philippine Flyff.
  • Ini3 - Ini3 serves Thailand with Thai Flyff.

[edit] Updates

Flyff is continually being updated. None of the official servers are pay-to-play, and instead adopt a free-to-play system with revenue generated from Cash Shops where players can buy clothing such as cat ears or Japanese school uniforms for in-game characters to receive, by using real money. There are also functional items available in the Cash Shops, such as items which give a temporary bonus to a stat, an item that adds 100 HP, and things of that sort.

Players are able to have non-combat creatures known as pets, who follow the player and pick up items for them. The first pet released in English Flyff was the Soccerball Angel, which was available during the 2006 World Cup. More pets were introduced to the game in August 2006, a week after the Version 1.6 update, to include baby versions of select monsters (Aibatt and Lawolf are the most popular ones).

English Flyff upgraded to Version 1.6 on July 25, 2006 with many new features as well as bug fixes. The new features include a mail system, a multiple Guild War system, new quests, and many other updates. Pets obtainable with in-game currency through NPC shops were officially announced by the GMs the day of the patch, but players were informed that this was no longer true only a few hours after the update, and the servers were rolled back to remove pets bought from NPC shops. The pets were then placed in the cash shop at a later date, available for only a limited time.

A week after the Version 1.6 update, the pets removed from the NPC shops were added to the Cash Shop, consisting of the baby versions of the Aibatt, Lawolf, Leyena, and Luia monsters found in Flyff. These were made available from August 3 to August 6, 2006 at a discounted price of 1750 Gpotatoes, and 2500 Gpotatoes afterwards until August 9, 2006. The discount was explained by Gala-Net to be for the misunderstanding that players had about "the pets being an in-game item".

Another part of the update includes free Cash Shop items given to new players who complete the first job change after reaching level 15. The reason for this decision is unknown, but items that would normally be from the Cash Shop, such as Scrolls of Activation, are now given to everyone at level 15, upon completion of their first job change quest. The items are chosen to reflect the role of the job. (For example, Mercenaries get VitalDrink X, but Magicians get Refresher Hold)

The servers are brought down for maintenance for two hours every Wednesday night from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Pacific Time. Since the Gala-Net headquarters is located in San Jose, California, the official times given are set to Pacific Time. The maintenance is sometimes officially extended for more complicated updates, but may run much longer than planned.


[edit] Game mechanics

Flyff's interface is similar to many other MMORPGs. Characters defeat monsters for experience points, which add up to level-ups. Food can be used by the character to restore lost health, but has a cool-down time after each use. Cool-down varies depending on the type of food. If a character reaches 0 HP, or goes below this, they die. Dead characters can respawn at the nearest town or Lodestar, at a predetermined location visited and set by a Pang's Lodelight, on Kebaras Island if they are criminals, or get resurrected by an Assist with the Resurrection skill. Whenever a character dies, they also lose 3% exp, and a golden, rotating "Exp box" appears where they died. If the character finds this box and clicks it, they may regain 1% of their lost exp.

A Status Window may be displayed to show some basic information about the character. The window shows the character's name at the top left, as well as the level of the character to the right of the name. A character portrait is also shown below the name. Next to the portrait is a set of five bars displaying different values.

HP - The HP bar shows the current and maximum health points.

MP - The MP bar shows the current and maximum magic points.

FP - The FP bar shows the current and maximum fatigue points, which are used to execute skills not requiring MP.

EXP - The EXP bar shows a character's current experience points as a percentage. When the EXP bar reaches 100%, the character advances a level.

PXP - The PXP bar shows a character's current Penalty EXP. Whenever a character uses a skill, it consumes a small amount of PXP, and this is transferred to the skill's relative exp. Whenever a monster is killed, experience from it goes first to filling up the PXP bar, and after that spills over into EXP.

[edit] Status points

When a character levels up, two status points are given to use toward advancing any of the character's stats. The status points do not have to be used immediately and can be left to accumulate. However, unused status points are not in any way beneficial.

Strength - Strength is the main factor in determining the damage dealt by any weapon but a wand or bow. Strength also extends the duration of a few Mercenary and Knight buffing skills.

Stamina - Stamina determines a character's maximum HP, maximum FP, and Defense Rate. Stamina is arguably the only stat that is useful to all four classes.

Dexterity - Dexterity, also known as Alacrity, determines a character's attacking speed, dodge rate and accuracy. It also increases damage dealt with a Bow. One point is added to the dodge rate for every two points of Dexterity. For every 10 points, Jesters gain a 4% increase in their critical hit rate, and all other classes gain a .9% increase.

Intelligence - Intelligence determines a character's maximum MP, the Magical Resistance rating, as well as how potent spells are, including damage, the duration of Assists' and Ringmasters' buffs, and the amount healed by healing spells. Intelligence also determines the damage of the two AoE skills given to the second jobs of Assists, Merkaba Hanzelrusha of Ringmasters and Bgvur Tialbold of Billposters.

[edit] Flying

At level 20, all characters can use a broom or board to fly around the world of Flyff upon acquiring one. A broom or board requires time to accelerate to its maximum speed. Max speed is determined by the cost of the broom or board with the most expensive board reaching up to speeds of 218 km/h. A character can dismount a broom or board in midair and will fall until reaching the ground. A broom or board cannot be summoned while moving or falling.

Also, one can chose to engage in air combat with flying monsters. Whenever a player defeats a flying monster, they gain normal experience and "aviation experience" which allows a player to level up their "aviation level" just as they would level up their player. Higher aviation levels speed up the summon time for your broom or board, as well as increasing the acceleration rate.

The two forms of player versus player combat available in Flyff are dueling and PK.

[edit] Dueling

Also known as PvP, dueling can take place only in the Arena south of Saint Morning. Dueling invokes a point-value system, where more highly skilled players have more points. Players are allowed to challenge anyone within 30 levels of their own, and points can be gained or lost depending on the outcome of the battle. Points gained or lost resulting from a battle vary based on the level of the character. Vagrants are also not allowed to participate.

A PK server is located within every server cluster. These servers are places where players may attack and kill one another, with the only restraint being that they must not be a "Vagrant" class character (Haven't go through job change yet). Inside towns are also Guardian Master NPCs, who allow a character to place a bounty on his/her killer. Any amount of bounty may be placed, with the upper limit being the amount of money the player has with them at the time. The first player to kill the person upon whom the bounty is placed gains the reward. Guardian NPCs are guarding every town so players with negative karma can't get through town gates or entrance or else he/she would be killed.

Flyff uses a point system for PK, which is called 'karma'. All characters start out with 0 karma, which decreases when the character attacks or kills a character with neutral or positive karma (The holy players). The color of the names change depending on the amount of positive or negative karma a player has. When a character with negative karma is killed, the character can randomly drop items and penya (game money) from their inventory, including those that are equipped. Also, anyone with negative karma is transported to Keberas Island unless they are ressurected. On Keberas Island, there is a small town, with all the usual vendors and an NPC named Heron who issues several quests. For players with small negative karma, he assigns a quest to kill 50 monsters, and upon completion the player gains an increase in their karma. For large negative karma, he bestows a 200 monster quest of the same result. Thirdly, he offers a quest for leaving the island. On Kebaras Island, all characters are unable to fly, use blinkwings, or attack other characters. Any character with zero or positive karma may attack Chaos NPCs, but would be unwise to do so, for they are very powerful.

There are four first classes excluding the starting class, the Vagrant, and eight subclasses in Flyff.

  • Vagrant - All characters begin the game as vagrants. At level 15, quests may be taken to progress to a more powerful class. Characters must change their class at level 15, as no more experience points can be gained until they do so.

Players can change to another class when they reach level 15 by completing a certain quest for that particular class.

  • Mercenary - Mercenaries fight with melee weapons, using Swords and Axes just like Vagrants, but their weapons are more refined than the ones their predecessors wield, and require specialists to handle. Mercenary abilities involve spinning about to shred enemies, spreading nets, and firing shockwaves at opponents from afar. A Mercenary can become either a Knight or Blade when they reach level 60.
  • Magician - Magicians are masters of magic who use weapons such as a Wand or Staff. They can cast powerful spells from afar, since they commonly have the lowest HP among all the classes. Magician abilities include small whirlwinds, mental assault, calling roots to entangle foes, and teleportation for a last-second escape. They may advance into a Psykeeper or Elementer at level 60.
  • Assist - Assists are supporting characters who can heal, and cast other supportive spells. Using a two-handed Stick, Assists can cast various buffs and other power-up spells to help another character or themselves in the game. Instead of becoming a support character, an melee-styled Assist is also possible. but unlike game such as Knight online this game doesn't provide cursing buffs (e.g. Decrease Hp by 40%). By using Knuckles and their own power-ups, Assists can be self-sufficient. Assist abilities include healing, hammering the ground to rattle surrounding foes, raising stats of players, and resurrecting dead players. At level 60, Assists can become Ringmasters or Billposters.

  • Acrobat - Acrobats are ranged fighter, utilizing Bows or Yo-yos. Arrows for bows are unique as they are consumed, unlike any other weapon employed in Flyff. Yo-Yos have a shorter range than bows, and both are two-handed, disabling the Acrobats' use of shields with their usual weapons equipped. Their yo-yo attacks also have a slight chance of knocking the enemy back. Acrobat abilities include stealing money from enemies, firing a barrage of arrows, and turning invisible. Acrobats can become Jesters or Rangers at level 60.

Players may change to an advanced class by completing certain quests at level 60. Upon reaching level 60, no further exp or pxp is gained until the character completes a "Second Job" quest. Each of the four first classes branch into two advanced classes.

  • Blade - Blades focus on speed and dexterity, while giving up defense and getting a huge increase in attack power. Blades are given the ability to dual wield (2 swords or 2 axes, but not a mix), doubling their current attack rate. ( If your attack rate is 800, Your right handed sword will do 1600 and your left will do 800) A Blade's abilities include Berserk, to raise attack speed and attack power, and Armor Penetrate, to lower enemies' defense.


  • Knight - Knights have the ability to wield powerful armor and weapons. Their oversized (two-handed) axes and swords give them unparalleled attack force, and their extremely heavy armor proves resilient, partly negating the loss of a shield. They make use of AoEs, and their Pain Reflector skill to make attacks partially reflect to their opponents. A Knight's abilities include Pain Reflector, and Guard to raise defense at the cost of attack.

  • Psykeeper - Psykeepers are the masters of hexes. Psykeepers have access to forbidden arts that can damage monsters from the inside, synch their own minds with their antagonists to share the pain from attacks, or to create barriers to ward off oncoming attackers. All their spells are non-elemental and can only be cast using a wand. A Psykeeper's abilities include Crucio to reflect damage, and Satanology to root enemies in place.
  • Elementor- Elementors have the ability to manipulate the elements. They can cast AoE spells ranging from poison clouds to sandstorms, and even massive meteors from deep space. All Elementor skills utilize a staff. An Elementor's abilities include not only offensive spells of every element, but an increase to elemental damage.

  • Billposter - Billposters are the offensive subclass of the Assist. Billposters focus on offensive skills rather than defensive and healing ones. Billposters retain their Assist abilities to heal and buff when they utilize a Stick. Billposter skills utilize Knuckles. A Billposter's abilities include Asmodeus to raise attack power, and the powerful Asalraalaikum attack.
  • Ringmaster - Ringmasters are the defensive subclass of the Assist. Ringmasters have the most powerful buffs in the game. Ringmasters support others to gain support, but their powers do not end at buffs, as they debuff as well as support the party with damaging force fields. Ringmasters use Sticks to buff and heal. A Ringmaster's abilities include Spiriture Fortune to raise the attack power of allies, and Geburah Tiphreth to raise the fighting capabilities.

[edit] Acrobat second classes

  • Jester - Jesters possesses a large range of attacks. Unlike the court jester of medieval times, these Jesters are masters of trickery, and are literally bloodthirsty fighters. They use yo-yos along with dark magic to drain blood in order to replenish their own health, inject poison into foes, launch coins to dent enemy armor, and impair their victims by attacking vital organs. They receive four times as much Critital Hit Rate from the Dexterity stat as any other class. A Jester's abilities include Enchant Poison, and Vital Stab to attack an enemy's vital parts.
  • Ranger - Rangers use bows to inflict damage, as well as render enemy strategies useless. They utilize the powers of nature into their attacks, such as creating Flame Arrows to singe flesh, Ice Arrows to slow enemy movement, and even Poison Arrows to inject toxic acids into foes. A Ranger's abilities include shots such as Triple Shot, Silent Arrow, and Fast Shot. Silent Arrow is among the Ranger's most deadly skills against player characters, as it renders all MP casting useless.

[edit] Cities and other areas

Flarine - Also known as Flaris, Flarine is the city where characters start in. Flarine was originally a very prosperous city, until Saint Morning was established, causing many to migrate there instead.

  • Mas Dungeon - A cave which lies north of Flarine, where ViceVeduques, a lamia-like monster, exist. Their leader, a lamia known as SerusUriel, is responsible for the sudden appearance of man-eating mutants in the cave, which are mutant versions of monsters existing outside.

Saint Morning - Saint Morning is a religious city located in the Southern part of the continent. It was originally a colony of Flarine, but gained its independence through a fierce war. The city is surrounded by a tall cliff, which is used as an air station for flying battleships. With many roads leading into Saint Morning, the city became prosperous.Under the strict supervison of the lovely mayor of Sain, SM had become Roika's Center for busines transactions!

  • Duel Zone - Also known as the Arena, the Duel Zone is a small arena South of Saint Morning where players can choose to duel other players.

Garden of Rhisis - Previously known as Death Island, the island is located Northeast of Saint Morning. It used to be filled with radiant flowers and lush fields, but with the invasion of Clockworks and an army of Tombstonebearers, the island spiraled towards its destruction.

Darkon - Darkon is known as the "City of Miners". It is also the new base of operations for the Red Bang Troupe, with Lord Bang Hanoyan presiding in a small city nestled between two mountains.

  • Dekane Mines - Far East of Darkon City lie a series of tunnels named Dekane Mines. Access to the mines is obtained after obtaining a MineCard. These mines harbour worker monsters called Keakoons, the natural guardians and upkeepers of the Dekane Mines. They guard the sealed door to the tunnels filled with mutants. Beyond the sealed door lies the Blue and Pink Roach Habitat, where highly aggressive insects are mostly sealed away in eggs. The Queen of the Roaches often attacks those who open the eggs. Beyond the Roach Habitats are more mutated monsters, possibly caused by the presence of Flyff's most powerful monster, Meteonyker.[citation needed]

Darkon 2 - Darkon 2 is a huge cave where the central city of Darkon Island is located. Many of the inhabitants are disgruntled from living in darkness and fending off the monsters surrounding the city, and have turned irritable or downright insane as a result.

  • Clockwork's Cage - The Clockwork's Cage is within walking distance of the Darkon 2 citadel. The only means of accessing the cage is by a warp portal. The legendary monster Clockworks is housed within it, and many warriors enter this cursed abode in hopes of slaying the giant menace once and for all, before it can escape and wreak havoc on Madrigal.

Darkon 3 - Darkon 3 is divided into eight areas: Herret, Cendil, Ancient Night, Arians, Magmient, Brakin, Death Wilderness, and Guardian. After the Hero War, the descendants of Darkon 3 set up altars to honor the heroes of Darkon 3. The eight altars are located in the eight divisions.

  • Herret - An area that was contaminated by Aes, and as a result, most of the living creatures there are also contaminated.
  • Cendil - This area incorporates a mushroom theme, but is otherwise similar to Herret.
  • Ancient Night - A giant forest with a legend that there is a guardian that watches over the trees.
  • Arians - An area that is said to be man-made, but its origin is unknown. Some people believe that the water from the area grants special powers.
  • Magmient - An area full of lava and toxic gases, with no signs of life.
  • Brakin - A former industrial area, but all of the factories are no longer operational.
  • Death Wilderness - A desert filled with poisonous gases.
  • Guardian - The final resting place of heroes who died during the Hero War, and one of the final battlegrounds during the war.

Glitch Island - Also known as Dokdo, Glitch Island is often reached by mistake. There is no official way to enter the island, which is an endless archipelago of featureless landmasses.

Kebaras Island - Also known as Exiles, Kebaras Island is a dark, desolate penal colony consisting of a campsite, a wilted cropfield, a twisted wilderness with rampaging beasts and robots, and sparsely located warp portals to Flarine, Saint Morning, and Darkon. Only reachable on a PK server, this island is where criminals are respawned. Players here are given two different quests: one for a key to escape the island via a warp portal, another to clear negative karma by killing monsters.

Dragon Coliseum - Reachable from Flarine, and set inside a massive volcanic crater, this is where weekly guild tournaments are held. Merchants have been known to sell their wares in the stands, anticipating the hundreds who gather weekly to watch the tournaments.
