The public school system in New York, NY is the largest in the United States, serving approximately 1 million students per year. Education is overseen by the New York City Department of Education, currently headed by Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein. At this level, textbooks and citywide assessment tests are specified. The precise details of instructional units are left to lower levels in the schools hierarchy.
The city is divided into 10 regions, each of which contains two to four Community School Districts. In addition, three citywide regions contain the city's special education, alternative, and charter schools.
