Flowers on the Wall

Flowers on the Wall was the first hit record, in 1964, for the country music vocal group the Statler Brothers. It was written by Lew DeWitt who was the group's original tenor vocalist.
The song is the story of a depressed man who is despondent over the breaking up of his romantic relationship with his girlfriend and hence develops ways to pass the time he formerly spent with her including the activity suggested by the title of the song, counting the number of flowers on a piece of patterned wallpaper. Other activities included "playing solitaire 'til dawn" (with "a deck of fifty-one" – one card short), "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo."
The song gained exposure amongst a new generation after it was used by Quentin Tarantino in Pulp Fiction (starring Bruce Willis, who quoted the song again in Die Hard: With a Vengeance).
This song is also very popular with those wintering over at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, as it talks about a lack of recreational activities, which is a problem during the winter at the South Pole.
