Florida State Road 953
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
State Road 953 - locally known as LeJeune Road, Southwest 42d Avenue, Northwest 42d Avenue, Southeast 8th Avenue, and East 8th Avenue - is a 11.4-mile-long north-south street in Miami-Dade County, Florida serving the Miami area. Its northern terminus is an intersection with SR 916 (Northwest 135th Street), 0.6 miles south of the northern end of LeJeune Road at the terminal of Opa-locka Airport. Its southern terminus is an intersection with U.S. Route 1 (South Dixie Highway) in Coral Gables near the Village of Merrick Park shopping mall.
State Road 953 is actually the second Florida Department of Transportation designation for the stretch of LeJeune Road south of Northwest 103rd Street (SR 932): until 1983, it was signed State Road 913 (a designation now being applied to the Rickenbacker Causeway).
Along the route of SR 953 are the cities of Opa-locka, Hialeah, Miami, and Coral Gables. LeJeune Road is the primary access road for Miami International Airport, although several attempts to supersede it with a LeJeune Expressway have been defeated since the 1960s.
Construction of a connector expressway between the Airport Expressway (SR 112) and the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) is resulting in a shifting of LeJeune Road the equivalent of one block to the west to accommodate the requirements of building the Miami Intermodal Center and an extension of Metrorail to west Miami-Dade County (and ultimately to Florida International University).
South of US 1, LeJeune Road continues another 1.4 miles as a heavily-wooded residential Coral Gables street, ending at a traffic circle at Cocoplum Plaza.
