Florida's 23rd congressional district
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Florida's Twenty-Third Congressional District is a U.S. congressional district in Florida. Like many congressional districts, the 23rd was gerrymandered into an odd snaking shape in order to ensure it as a "safe district" for its incumbent representative.
Currently, the residents of the Twenty-Third District are represented by Democrat Alcee Hastings. Hastings was impeached by the then-Democratic-controlled US House of Representatives by a vote of 413 to 3 for accepting a $150,000 bribe from two brothers who had a case before then-Judge Alcee Hastings. Among those voting to impeach him were Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer. He was convicted by the US Senate on multiple counts on October 20, 1989, and removed from the bench. He was later acquitted of the criminal charges that resulted from the Congressional probe. The terms of his conviction did not bar him from holding public office, and citizens of his district chose to elect him to the US House of Representatives in 1992. He has been re-elected every term since that time. In 2006, he was unopposed.
