The Florence Biennale is an international contemporary art festival and exhibition held in Florence with an inter-disciplinary approach, ranging from the fine arts to everyday expression such as fashion trends.
The Biennale is held every two years in Florence under the artistic direction of Germano Celant, Luigi Settembrini and Ingrid Sischy, at internationally prestigious museums and traditional exhibition locations, including the Cappelle Medicee, the Forte Belvedere, the Galleria dell'Accademia, the Museo Civico di Prato, the Museo Ferragamo, the Orsanmichele, the Sala Bianca of Palazzo Pitti, the Sale d'Arme of Palazzo Vecchio, the Stazione Leopolda, and the Uffici.
The first Florence Biennale was composed of seven exhibitions and featured fashion designers, such as Alexander Mc Queen, Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace, Jil Sander, Karl Lagerfeld, Miuccia Prada, Rifat Ozbek, Vivienne Westwood, Yohji Yamamoto, and Yves Saint-Laurent; and artists, musicians, photographers, painters, and sculptors, such as Beverly Semmes, Bruce Weber, David Bowie, Damien Hirst, Elton John, Inez van Lamsweerde, Jan Fabre, Julian Schnabel, Kiki Smith, Leonardo Pereznieto, Roy Lichtenstein, Rosemarie Trockel, and Tony Gragg.
The next Biennale is to be held in Florence in December 2007 in the Fortezzo de Basso. Exhibiting artists will include Joy Engelman from Australia, and Polish figurative painter Aleksander Balos who lives in the USA.
