Flandrau State Park

Flandrau State Park is a Minnesota state park on the Cottonwood River just outside of New Ulm.
The park was established in 1934 to provide unemployment relief through its construction. The main project was to construct a dam on the Cottonwood River to provide a lake for recreational purposes. There are very few natural lakes in this section of the state, so building a lake afforded opportunities for fishing, swimming, canoeing, and boating. The dam, as well as the buildings, were constructed by the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps. The buildings were constructed of a colorful local quartzite and designed to reflect the German heritage of nearby New Ulm.
