The Flag of Salt Lake City was redesigned in the 1960s. A contest, sponsored by Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, was held in November 2004 to update the flag. Twelve submissions were entered.

[edit] New Design

The current flag is blue and purple, and features the Wasatch mountains in the background. It was picked on October 4, 2006 by the city council.

[edit] Old Design

The old flag design depicts a white background with pioneers to the left and right of a beehive shaped outline. (The beehive is considered a heraldic symbol of industry/industriousness.) Within the outline is a scene of a covered wagon, mountains and a sunrise with the words "This is the Place" and "Salt Lake City" below.
