[edit] History
Five Guys was founded in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia, by Janie and Jerry Murell and their five sons, the "Five Guys." In 2002, there were five locations in Northern Virginia run by the family. The restaurants had gained popularity among locals, and the Murells decided to franchise the stores. The franchises proved to be a success; as of April 2006, there were 87 locations along the U.S. East Coast from Florida to Connecticut. One hundred more locations will open in 2006, and there are 1,000 more being planned. The company claims that each store earns about one million dollars per year. [1]
[edit] Accolades
Five Guys has been popular in the press as well as with customers. It has received numerous awards in Washington area publications including "Number 1 Burger" by Washingtonian Magazine for six years. Since franchising, it has also received awards in other cities, including Annapolis, Richmond, and Philadelphia. [2]
[edit] Menu
The Five Guys menu is restricted to only a few items. The main menu item is the hamburger. The regular burger consists of two beef patties, and the "little burger" has one. American cheese and bacon can each be added for an additional charge. All toppings from an extensive selection can be added for free. The other main item is french fries, boardwalk-style and fried in peanut oil. There are two sizes, regular and large, and two varieties, regular "Five Guys Style" or spicy "Cajun" style. The other menu items are hot dogs, available with bacon and cheese, and grilled cheese and veggie sandwiches. Patrons are invited to snack on complimentary shelled peanuts while waiting for their orders to be prepared.
