Five Came Back is a 1939 disaster film, which predated many of the more famous air disaster films, such as Airport. The film starred Chester Morris, Lucille Ball, and John Carradine and was directed by John Farrow. Renowned film noir cinematographer Nick Musuraca served as director of photography, bringing a noir feel to the disaster drama. Despite a relatively low budget for the time, the RKO release became a major hit for the studio.

Twelve passengers on a commercial flight to South America are stranded in the jungle when the airplane encounters a hurricane and is forced to crash land. Knowing that the area is inhabited by cannibalistic natives and dangerous animals, the pilots and passengers race to repair the plane and clear a runway. However, low fuel levels limit the number of people that can escape to five. As the plane is repaired, the question becomes who of the twelve gets to live or die?
