Fischer Projects

The Fischer Projects are one of the Housing Projects of New Orleans and are located in the Algiers District on the West bank, part of the 15th Ward. The official name for the project is "The William J. Fischer Housing Development," named after a former Housing Authority of New Orleans] (HANO) chairman that served in the 1960s. The Fisher projects are built around Whitney Ave.
The projects originally consisted of a 13-floor highrise and 14 3-floor units. The highrise was imploded in 2006 as part of a demolition and revitalization program.
Prior to Hurricane Katrina the Fischer Projects were known to be a dangerous, high-crime area. Stories of the violence, whether true or local urban legend, include armed carjackings along Whitney Avenue in the middle of the day and a father, high at the time, dropping his month-old child out of the tower to its death because the baby was crying.
