[edit] Wikimania Media Contest, 2006

Dear Fir,

Glad to see you're in touch with Fernanda Viegas. She's awesome.

I'm planning another media competition this summer, like the one from last year. I could use serious help from some dedicated media-lovers. Would you be interested in helping organize the competition this year, and being one of the judges?

Cheers, +sj + 18:48, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

PS - for instance, it would be great if the presentations from last year (on commons) were turned into a proper gallery. Then the contest needs some promotion; with a local feeder contest next month on en; then open for submissions, and keep them organized into their own galleries... then prelim judging, celeb judging, and a nice awards ceremony :-)

[edit] Photo:An early radio on display in the National Museum of Australia

This image appears to be a localizing speaker as part of a display and not an early radio.

The anonymous notice above has been copied here from the talk page of the article History of radio. Since you uploaded the image, can you provide any additional information? The photo appears to be a modern plastic hemisphere rather than an old radio. --Blainster 06:22, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mac again

Hey! Your crespuscular ray picture is the picture of the day tomorrow! Congrats!

Well, I need a favor, per se. I am applying for the National Honor Society, in my 2nd year of secondary school, I think that's how your Aussies say it :). Perhaps you could write a short bit saying who you are, and that I contribute well to Wikipedia, participating in many activities, and I am in a number of groups, I welcome new users etc etc etc or something like that, and I have a large number of contributions (1500 going on 2000). Wikipedia counts as a community service, extracurricular activity, and its a "club." Its sort of like a letter of recommendation, that I have the smarts and character to join the National Honors Society. Thank you very much!! I need it in a day or two, only one or two paragraphs. -- Mac Davis] ⌇☢ ญƛ. 10:54, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your river pic (Harrietville Trout Farm)

Hey Fir, just wanted to know how you post-processed that image. It appears to be one a tone mapped HDR->LDR image, as well as having the associated unrealistic 'glow' in certain bright areas. ;) Nice pic, though. I miss Oz. :) England isn't particularly photogenic! At least, London isn't, once you get past the usual touristy suspects. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 11:14, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

  • I haven't completely given up on England. You're right, there are pockets of beauty here and there, but London is by and large quite uninspiring! St Pauls Cathedral is the most obvious cathedral, but that costs $24 to get in and photography is prohibited, I've already done the Tower of London, I think I could probably improve on the existing FP of Westminster], so that is a possibility and Buckingham Palace isn't even worthy of anything other than a touristy snapshot photo! :) The scene is too 'busy' and its hard to find an angle that doesn't have fences, bushes, people, etc in the way (As in here[1].. which is coincidently the featured article for today). And when its all said and done, Buckingham Palace isn't that visually impressive anyway, IMHO! Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 08:27, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Fir0002 design 07.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Fir0002 design 07.gif. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rory096(block) 14:45, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Fir0002 design 07.gif

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Fir0002 design 07.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rory096(block) 14:45, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Moon in daytime

FIR002, I envy your picture of the moon against a blue sky. I have tried to take a picture of the moon at dusk, and do not have the necessary features in my digital camera (3x zoom, f/number 3.5). I somehow believe I would be able take pictures of the moon, if I had the correct zoom and f/number (10x zoom?, f/2.8, tripod?). This is a guess based on conversations with others who have been able to take pictures of the moon (They had a Canon, 10x zoom) with their digital cameras. I have also heard that ISO 800 setting might help. Is there an additional specification which I might need to get that shot I want? --Ancheta Wis 23:36, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Fir0002, yes, that is the picture. My problem is that the blue sky is overwhelming the faint moon in the image. If I didn't know that the moon was at that location, I would not have been able to see the faint moon in the image. Because there are a lot of other details in my picture, I can see why image of the moon would be washed out. But in your picture, there is a huge variation in dynamic range, and your picture of the moon just pops right out. So if you were to crop out everything but the moon, your picture would still show lots of detail. But in my picture, it just looks like a patch of sky.
Thank you for your recommendation. It really helps to know what to get, the next time. Regards, Ancheta Wis 09:39, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Also, your picture of the moon must have been shot in the Southern Hemisphere: it's upside down to my eyes!!! --Ancheta Wis 09:43, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Fir0002 banner 01.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Fir0002 banner 01.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 13:05, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Photos

I came across your awesome photos on commons! I like photography as well. I have a Panasonic FZ15 (35-420mm with IS). My photos on wiki are here: User:Waqas.usman/Waqas.usman_gallery. I'd like you to comment on my photos as well :) I've been learning gradually about a little post-processing as well (sometimes I use the auto-fix in Picasa2 and sometimes I do some extensive sharpness correction etc in PShop with layer masks). Do you process most of your images or are they straight from the camera (except cropping)? Of course I realize that a DSLR's quality of image is higher, I was just wondering how often do you have to process your images. Please reply at my talk page. More of my photos are at http://pbase.com/waqas and http://waqas.fotopic.net Waqas.usman 08:24, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi Waqas.usman!
Thanks a lot for your kind comment! I like your pix, my favourite being Image:Panorama Rakaposhi&Diran.JPG. Very nice! I've also heard of the Panosonic - it's got some very nice specs. Do you like it (particularly the IS)? I definetly post process. Pretty much all my images I give a standarded sharpening, levels adjustment, but some take a lot more. I don't think any professional would upload straight from the camera, you can always do a little more. I'm not saying that the quality of a DSLR isn't excellent (it is!) but you'd be silly not to make your pic just perfect. You can also recover some shocking shots into something quite usable. Have a look at this: Before, After. You might have different taste to me, but I quite like the edit.
Anyway thanks again for your message! --Fir0002 www 10:46, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
Hi Fir0002, Thanks for your comments. I had been busy the last few days... The Panasonics are good (FZ10, 15, 20, then FZ30), but their problem is the small sensor size and hence the noise. Otherwise they would have ruled the market (because they all had f/2.8 throughout 420mm range, not on FZ30 though). The FZ10 had a 1/2.5" CCD and gave 4MP, and its successors FZ15 and FZ20 also had 4MP and 5MP with the same 1/2.5" CCD sensor, but other upgrades. I chose FZ15 because of lower noise. Earlier I had an Olympus C2100UZ (38-380mm, IS, 2MP), I wish Oly had made a replacement for that, it was perfect for its generation and more than perfect for the price. I love the IS, but I've been wanting to get a DSLR because of the noise thing, and the lack of control with DoF (KM 5D is the nearest thing to my dream cam coz of the Anti-Shake built-in).
You're right about editing, I've been too lazy (or didn't have time to do the editing when I was able to upload earlier on), but now I do try to edit the pics before uploading them. About the two images you gave, I'll probably prefer a brightened version but I didn't like that brightened version better, you have a different taste :)
Nice talking to you! Waqas.usman 01:30, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DOF

I'm often frustrated by people of FPC who oppose images with shallow DOF in cases where the shallow DOF actually enhances the image, for example in cases where it makes the background less distracting. I ran across the salad platter image and was wondering if you thought that this was a case which benefited from the shallow DOF, or if perhaps you need a tilt/shift lens. :) --Gmaxwell 22:20, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

I was just wondering where and when [2] was taken? Nice photo, by the way. -- Beland 01:57, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi Beland,
Why do you need the info? I'd prefer not to disclose the location etc, as I'm not sure on how the council of that area would view that kind of disclosure. As for the date, it was taken about a year and a bit ago. --Fir0002 www 08:43, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
It would be interesting for readers to have some context. I'm sure different parts of the world do this sort of thing differently, and this is a good example of the way things were done at a particular time in a particular place. It's also a rather beautiful landscape, in stark contrast with the pile of garbage, and it makes me curious about how the rest of that landscape is doing. Most landfills are in out-of-the-way places, and people don't really know where they are, so it would be informative to locate this one precisely, or at least describe the general area (remote wilderness, suburbia, island, etc). It's not like anyone can make you un-take the picture, but if you don't want to reveal the exact jurisdiction, it would be interesting to know the country and state/province if applicable. -- Beland 12:48, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Taking photos of Flinders St Station

G'day, I had this idea for taking photos of things like that where you have traffic passing constantly. Is it possible to take a long succession of photos (say 20 photos in the space of a minute, or even more?) then reconstitute all the parts of the images together that don't have cars across them at any point in time? Do you know if anyone's tried this kind of thing? Could be a pretty unique photo afterwards! Flinders St at midday without a single car or pedestrian! Stevage 17:55, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Questions

Few questions (I may copy your answers to the main RFA page if I feel they are relevant to others):

1) Why do you have an external link in your signature, despite being asked not to (see this message that you received) and it being regarded as spam (see WP:SPAM#How_not_to_be_a_spammer point 7)?

Whoops! I seriously had no idea there was any official guidelines saying not to add an external link to your sig! I thought Sj's commnet was more on the aesthetic value of having the link! My mistake! I've now removed it.

2) Do you not view edit summaries as important for all pages?

I think there is a point when they are not important, although I admit I probably am guilty of having crossed the point a fair few times.

3) More fundamentally, you show very little experience with areas admins deal with except for images. Would you actively avoid these 'other areas' (such as vandal fighting, blocking, page protection, afd closing etc)? How would you react if as an admin someone asks you 'please block this user': under what circumstances would you block?

I certainly would not actively avoid these areas, although I can't say at the moment I'd actively pursue them either. If anyone request me to block a user I would of course do something about it. That would obviously involve analysing the basis of the request and reaching a decision. I think that for the first few occaisions (until I have more experience) I'd probably ask a more experienced admin (unless it is an obvious case) for advice before taking any action.

Sorry if the above sounds like an interrogation. I'm in no way trying to put down your great contributions to Wikipedia, and I have no problem with admins who don't have full experience in every aspect of Wikipedia (i.e. if you want to be an 'image admin' that's fine by me), as long as I am convinced no damage will be done elsewhere. Petros471 08:53, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

No problem, happy to answer them. I most certainly hope that I will never do any damage with administrator privileges. I think though, as I mentioned in the first question of the RFA, that most of my sysop chores would be to do with images. So yes, if you want to look it that way, I would like to be an 'image admin' - of course I may expand to other area's as I go. Thanks for the questions! --Fir0002 09:14, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi! I noticed that you have the same scanner used to get an image of Newton's rings as this guy (see the "Lovely Newton ring example").

It happens when the the scanner is cold or something, I am hoping you have an example that you could upload. If you are too busy or don't have an example don't worry about :-) --Commander Keane 23:03, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Closing FPCs

Hi Fir0002. I saw your comment in your RfA about closing FPCs. Anybody can close them--you don't need admin powers :). I think Veledan has been doing a lot recently because he wrote a short script that made it really easy. Good luck on your RfA! ~MDD4696 01:28, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi Fir,

I'm certain you know your back catalogue better than I do; perhaps you have some suggestions here? Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 09:35, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
