Phosphatidylserine is a nutrient found in fish, green leafy vegetables, soybeans and rice, and is essential for the normal functioning of the brain cell membrane. Phosphatidylserine or PS was originally processed from bovine brain. Prion disease scares in the 1990's outlawed this process, and soon a soy-based alternative was discovered. Soy PS is often used in early onset Alzheimers. Studies show mild improvements in early cognitive decline. Some studies show an improvement in cognitive function and short term memory in healthy participants. A soy PS aqueous emulsion containing drink named Function Brainiac is popular in California.
