Infrequent contributing

Bushfires are getting close to my home and so I will be busy preparing for them and may not respond quickly to messages. I will still be contributing, but not sure how often, depends on the situation.
On a related note my first appearence in The Age shows Swifts Creek in heavy smoke. It is slide no. 3 (as of Dec 12)

About Me: Hi! My name is Peter. I'm a year 11 student living in East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. I had been using Wikipedia as a reference source for ages, but it wasn't until September 2004 that I started actually contributing to Wikipedia. I'm lucky in that I have academic skills as well as athletic talents. I'm currently doing Year 11, but have taken on two VCE Unit 3, 4 subjects (Math Methods and Chemistry) which I'm enjoying and doing well in. I passed Units 1 & 2 in both subjects in 2005, doing particularly well in Chemistry — achieving 100% in my exam. I have also won several athletics trophies, but due to illness wasn't able to compete in the 2005 aths. I am skilled in flash animation and am hoping tha Wikipedia will soon allow users to upload in this versatile format, and get rid of the obsolete animated gif format. I am skilled in Photoshop and in particular enhancing photos. I enjoy creating collages and played a big role in our schools magazine, SCOBE.

[edit] My Camera

I have finally got a proper camera (the mighty Canon 20D coupled with a decent Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di lens). I also have a wide angle lens, the Canon 17-40mm f/4 L. Recently I purchased the Canon 85mm f/1.8 prime lens and the sensational Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L.

A year ago (as my userpage used to say) I had no intention whatsoever to become a professional photographer, but last December (2004) I won a $1000 grant to start a photographic business. So, although I still plan to do something else in life (I plan to go to Uni and study for something) I am, for now, trying to sell prints. So my contributions to Wikipedia should have a marked improvement in quality, but due to my slow internet connection the image size will probably only increase to 1600 pixels wide by whatever the aspect ratio high.

Update: After a lot of soul searching/consideration etc etc, I've come to the tough decision that some of the images I upload (those I hope to sell on my website) will only be uploaded at 1280 pixels wide. This is simply because wikipedia does not have a license which prohibits free commercial use of images uploaded. If wikipedia needs to use one of my images for printing in a book, I'll be happy to provide a higher res image and provide permission for wikipedia to do so. --Fir0002 01:26, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

I now have a website, www.photos.flagstaffotos.com, which displays many of my photos. As it is relatively new, I haven't uploaded all my pix onto it yet, but I can upload any on request. You can purchase prints of my photos here. I can print up to A3+ (13" × 19") on a professional printer. Panoramas can be printed up to 1m long.
If you have enjoyed looking at or using my photos please consider supporting a 17 yr old photographer! It will help me to purchase a new lens which will improve the quality of photos I can upload onto wiki!

[edit] Nature's Pic's

Nature's Pic's Online which describes itself as "A Guide to Amateur Wildlife Photography" contains some sensational photographs. Luckily for Wikipedia, Alan D. Wilson (photographer) has generously offered high res images for use on Wikipedia. I have contacted him and he has emailed me several photos. Hopefully this partnership can continue.

A friend of mine, John O'Neill (my IT teacher) supports Wikipedia, but doesn't have time to contribute. So instead of letting some great shots (which he has released under the GFDL) go to waste, I prepare, upload and find a home for his photos.
