[edit] Plot Summary

The novel tells a story that follows Joseph F. Dean, a kid just out of college in the 24th century. He's had his heart set on the Army until he gets to the recruiting station and is inspired to join the Confederation Marines. The next day he is on a ship to the Confederation military training world of Arsenault.

After basic training, Dean and his new friend McNeal are assigned to Company L, 34th FIST (Fleet Initial Strike Team) on Thorsfinni's World. Not long after arriving on the planet, Company L is assigned to a humanitarian relief effort on the backwater planet of Elneal. The planet it useless except for its mineral deposits, run by Consolidated Enterprises, and is completely overrun by nomadic tribes who war amongst themselves constantly. When Company L arrives on planet, they soon realize that the tribes have allied to rid the planet of the Confederation and Consolidated Enterprises.

Stationed in a village, Dean and his platoon try to retain order and deliver the humanitarian aid they were there for. Things seem calm and peaceful, but Gunnery Sergeant Bass knows that things won't remain that way and tries to convince the platoon leader that the radio equipment is flawed. The lieutenant doesn't listen, so in order to demonstrate the problem, Bass takes a patrol into the desert to test it out. While testing it, they realize that the village the rest of the platoon is stationed at is under attack and they're too far away to help. The rest of the platoon in the village believe that Bass, Dean, Claypoole, and the rest of the patrol are dead and withdrawals to Company L headquarters in New Obbia.

Stranded, Bass leads the patrol 240 kilometers through the desert to New Obbia, while fighting horse-mounted nomads the whole way.
