First League of Serbia and Montenegro
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The First Federal League (Serbian: Prva savezna liga, or Meridian SuperLiga) was the top football league of Serbia and Montenegro. It was organized by the Football Association of Serbia and Montenegro.
The winner of the First League would start the qualifications for the UEFA Champions League from the second round. Second and third placed teams would start the qualifications for the UEFA Cup from the second round, as well as the National Cup winner. Fourth placed team would be competing in UEFA Intertoto Cup.
The bottom teams were relegated to the two Second Leagues: the Second League of Serbia (Druga savezna liga grupa Srbija) and the Second League of Montenegro (Druga savezna liga grupa Crna Gora).
As of 3 June 2006, after proclamation of Montenegro's independence the union of Serbia and Montenegro ceased to exist, as well as its top football competition. The newly formed competitions are the First League of Serbia and the First League of Montenegro.

[edit] History
While Serbia and Montenegro were part of the socialist Yugoslavia, their top league was the Yugoslav First League. When SFRY dissolved, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was formed in 1992 and the Serbian and Montenegrin teams played in this league, although it was still named Yugoslav First League. In 2003 the FR Yugoslavia was renamed to Serbia and Montenegro and the football league followed suit.
