[edit] Description

The Book of Shadows describes a Firestarter as a "rare and coveted magical creature", and specifies that they are usually mortal, meaning they are not always witches, but as in the case of Christy Jenkins, they can be. The power to start fires usually manifests in adolescence, serving as a metaphor for puberty in the character of Tyler.

Because of their advanced power, they are found by bounter hunters, to be given to and trained by a powerful upper level demon called Ludlow, who prepares them for servitude to the The Source of All Evil, for whom they act as bodyguards. In some instances, where the Source in power does not possess pyrokinetic powers, he may instead choose to kill the Firestarter and take its powers. ("Lost and Bound")

Firestarters are shown to be able to generate fire, and towards the end of the final season, Christy showed she was capable of propelling her fireballs without the aid of her telekinetic sister Billie. ("Gone with the Witches")

In a book set outside the established Charmed canon, Firestarters are one of four species of elementals. Along with Firestarters there exist Windwalkers, Waterbearers and Earthshakers, each with a control over their respective element. It is said that on the Night of Aeolus, when the planets align in a specific way and the elements and weather are thrown out of harmony, the balance can only be restored when an elemental of each designation, chosen, converge and put an end to it. A demon known as Tempest (not to be confused with Tempus, the Demon of Time) sought to use this elemental chaos to his advantage. Without this ritual the weather will eventually tear the world apart. Tyler is selected to be the Firestarter to do this after his predecessor, another Firestarter, is killed. The Charmed Ones, Darryl Morris and Tyler find the elementals who are assigned to save the world defeat the demon Tempest.
