Fiona Jones

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fiona Elizabeth Ann Jones (born 27 February 1957) is a politician in the United Kingdom. A former journalist, she was elected as Labour Member of Parliament for Newark in 1997.

In April 1999 she and her agent, Des Whicher, were convicted of submitting fraudulent election expenses returns. As a result she was technically disqualified from the House of Commons, but when her conviction was overturned she was allowed to return. She contested the 2001 general election but lost her seat. The 2001 election was marked by the Newark Advertiser's decision to totally ignore any of her activities and to praise the Conservative candidate at every possible opportunity; long-standing local residents drew a parallel between its activities and the 1945 libel case over Harold Laski.
