Finisterre Range

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Finisterre Range is a mountain range in northeastern Papua New Guinea, stretching to the Huon Peninsula, at 5.8° S 146.1° E. Many rivers originate in this range. The highest point of the range, which is ranked 45th in the world by prominence, is usually quoted at 4,175 m, but SRTM data suggests that it is nearer to 4,120 m.

The location of the highest point is not completely certain. The point to which authorities give the 4,175 m elevation is at 5°57′15″S, 146°22′30″E, but Mount Sarawaket, at 6°18′39″S, 147°05′27″E, whose given 4,121 m elevation is SRTM compatible, may the the true high point of this range.

Prominence researchers are not aware of any ascents to either of the above high points, so the high point of the Finisterre range may be the world's most prominent unclimbed summit. Ascending to these summits would be likely to depend on finding a way through thick tropical rain forest.
