Fingerprint is usually a human fingerprint made by the pattern of ridges on the pad of a human finger. Other types of fingerprints include,
- Genetic fingerprint, distinguishing two individuals of the same species using only samples of their DNA
- Peptide mass fingerprinting, in biochemistry, identification of proteins
- Message digest, in cryptography .
- TCP/IP stack fingerprinting, identifying computer operating systems from network packets
- Acoustic fingerprint, in audio technology, unique code generated from audio samples, allowing computer identification of music
- Typewriter#Forensic identification, a fingerprint formed by wear and tear in individual machines
- Paper shredder#Forensic identification, a fingerprint formed by minute variations of the spacing of its blades
- RF fingerprint, characterstic signature from minute variations of frequencies emitted by a radio frequency device.
- Isotopic fingerprint, characteristic ratios of isotopes in material
- Public key fingerprint, a string of bytes identifying a cryptographic public key
- Generally, a fingerprint is a combination of variables characteristical for one individual member or an individual class of a group. These are in some cases also called signatures.
