Fine art pot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fine art pot aspires to the conditions of art, generally by prioritizing conceptual and aesthetic qualities over functionality or usefulness. It is the opposite of the ethical pot (or utilitarian pottery). These two positions originate from the anxiety of a place and definition for the crafts in the age of industrialisation and mechanised-production, and from the desire to establish ceramics as a fine art medium.
Modern ceramic artists/potters often engage in what has become know as the "Art vs. Craft debate", in which the merits of each approach are perpetually reiterated without resolution.
