This proposal is an attempt to cleanup and unify how Wikipedia handles filmographies, or lists of movies, television shows, video games, etc. that a person has acted in, directed, produced, written, composed for, etc.

As it stands, many actor filmographies are often lifted wholesale from IMDb with minimal modification if any at all. This page proposes to standardize how we display filmography information in a way that is pleasing to the eye, manages the information well, remains simple to update and add to and is done without borderline copyright infringement.

The proposal calls for using a series of templates, one for the beginning of the table, one for the end and one for each filmography entry.

The beginning of the table utilizes one of the following templates:

Other professions may be added at a later time, but these will be the most notable film- and television-oriented professions.

Each entry in the filmography, will use one of the following templates, depending on whether the entry is referring to a movie, a television show or a video game.

At the end of the filmography, we need to utilize one more template. This is because this is tabular data, and, thus, requires a little bit of extra coding to actually end the table.

Filmographies should run in reverse chronological order. In other words, new entries will be added at the top.
Information about the film itself (such as whether the film is currently filming or in post-production) should not be included in the actor's filmography.
There should be separate filmographies for acting, directing, etc. They should not be unified. However, separate filmographies should only be used if the person has done significant work in those multiple fields. Clint Eastwood, for example, should have separate acting and directing filmographies, because he has a substantial canon of work in both fields.
The Title and Role fields are never automatically linked. Only link to Role fields if there is an existing article for the subject (or if it corresponds to a fictional depiction of a real character). The year fields in {{Filmography-movie}} automatically link to the appropriate "Year in film" page. The year fields in {{Filmography-tv}} are not automatically linked, but should use one of the following formats:
- [[2002 in television|2002]] (for one year)
- [[2003 in television|2003]]-[[2004 in television|2004]] (for multiple years)
- [[2005 in television|2005]]-present]] (for appearances in ongoing television shows, even if it's been less than one year)
For television, the years should correspond with the years that the person has been involved with the TV show, not the duration of the show itself.
Voice acting should be marked with "(voice)" following the character's name.
Actors appearing as themselves should be denoted as "Himself" or "Herself".
Notable special guest appearances in television show episodes should be followed by the name of the episode in question and a link if an article exists for it. For example:
