Festil II of Gwynedd

In the fictional universe of the Deryni novels of Katherine Kurtz, Festil II Furstán-Festil was the eighth King of Gwynedd, reigning from 839 to 851. Known as "Festil the Lame", he was the second member of the Deryni House of Festil to sit upon the throne of Gwynedd.

Festil Avgust Fyodor Furstán-Festil was born on February 23, 800, the firstborn son and heir of Count Festil of Fathane and his wife, Duchess Maire of Phtheus. He was created Earl of Lendour on July 3, 822, shortly after his father ascended to the throne of Gwynedd and was crowned King Festil I. Upon his marriage to Princess Brionne of Mooryn, Festil was also created Duke of Carthmoor in 826. He succeeded his father upon the throne of Gwynedd in 839, and was officially crowned King of Gwynedd on April 1, 840. One month later, on May 1, he traveled to the Torenthi capital of Beldour to acknowledge his cousin, King Lajos I of Torenth, as Overlord of Gwynedd, but King Lajos' absence forced Festil to deliver his oath to Prince Regent Konrád. Disaster befell the city of Nyford when barbarians sacked the city in 849, but Festil failed to respond effectively and the invaders were never captured. The king died two years later when his carriage overturned while traveling from Valoret to Rhemuth during a storm. King Festil II Furstán-Festil died on April 29, 851, at the age of 51. He was succeeded by his eldest son and heir, Prince Festil III Furstán-Festil.
