The car was design by John Barnard. It was the first Ferrari he was responsible for designing, it sported a sharp nosed with a narrow monocoque and bulging side-pods designed to house the radiators. The 640 was powered by Ferrari's own 3.5L V12 engine which produced 600bhp it was mated to the very first semi-automatic gearbox seen in F1. It proved to be very unreliable, and hampered Ferrari's efforts throughout the season. The car was no match for the McLarens when the season began, but underwent a number of minor modifications that allowed Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger to net three wins between them. The chassis did prove to be very strong however, and allowed Berger to escape from a firey high speed crash (In San Marino) with only minor burns. Incredably he missed 1 race, and returned to action in mexico.
